Minors Trip to Kerry

Limerick's minor team put up a brave fight on Sunday against a much more experienced Kerry squad, though it was healthy to see such a young Limerick side a hard game was expected. The weather was perfect and it stayed sunny and warm till night. The pitch favoured bowlers as the field was uneven and the ball would not get to the boundary easily at all!

Short on players for various reasons limerick had to borrow two "Kerry men" not that they were Irish at all....We were put into bat for the 40 over game first. Swing was obvious and nearly all the limerick batsmen had problems with it. Our top order failed badly and set a bad total for the rest of the team i went out for two only and ducks and low scores were common..we were only at around 60 for 8 when late  arrival malik, and gerry devine came in to bat they held a good partnership keeping Kerry in the field longer than expected.

Our bowlers had a hard task with a poor batting score to work on so we had a good team talk and were in good spirits but we could not take a wicket and Kerry got the total with out a wicket lost though there were some bad umpiring decisions that went there way throughout the whole game and even the scorecard was badly done with mistakes on

 names and scores everywhere.

After the 40 over game we decided to have a 20-20 we had to bowl first. Our luck had returned and we took a wicket off the very first ball. Their only batsmen of any credit was eddie who got 16 not out. We bowled them out easily. Gerry Devine got a run-out off his bowling in his first over on his debut, a contender for limericks man of the match.

Also Argan bowled impressively and got 2 important wickets. They ended up with 81 though that total is questionable.

Off our first two overs we got 20 but then a top order collapse happened again and we looked down for defeat until gugs and malik were partners they  got 15 plus run partnership and kept us in the game but to win in the last over we needed yuvrag singh tactics of 6 6s. I came in after malik went out the field stopped me from getting a boundary off my first ball though this was a problem for all batsmen as the  pitch is a rugby one and is in bad condition. Gugs and me both and not outs but we lost narrowly. A better all round team performance with  many positives from our very young side.

LIMERICK LIONS AT IRELAND VS WEST INDIES

by  Brendan Devine

The group going to the match gathered at the Parkway shopping centre at 7 in the morning, Saturday, the 14th of July, looking extremely tired. After a short wait we go onto the bus, not before standing for a team photo though! We kept ourselves busy, chatting about cricket and the journey flew by. There was a great sense of excitement and anticipation on the bus as we neared Clontarf Cricket Club, the venue for the match.  We got off the bus and joined the steady flow of supporters entering the ground.

When we arrived at the side of the pitch we were very impressed with the pitch and delighted to see all our heroes warming up and preparing for the match. We all stopped to gaze at the bats, balls, pads and general cricket gear at a large stall. Some people splashed out to buy what they wanted now (others waited until later!) We got some chairs and set up 'camp' by the side of the pitch. Most of us took off and walked around the sideline watching the players train and hoping to meet some of them. After a long wait players started coming off the pitch and getting surrounded by adoring fans. The players were extremely sound and didn't refuse anyone as they signed shirts and books and stood for pictures. By the end of the day all of us had gotten loads of autographs!

The match start was delayed due to rain. When it finally started Ireland won the toss and chose to bat. We saw a few balls but then the rain came down hard and the players were off and the covers were on.

In the intervening time we spent some time chatting to the players, Trent Johnston and Kyle McCallun were definitely the nicest and spent loads of time with the fans. Everyone was delighted to see Shivnarine

Chanderpaul and get their picture taken with him. I met my hero Marlon Samuels and got his autograph which was great!!!

There were nets for training at the pitch which were open to fans.  Many of the Limerick lads played there with some Leinster players. We met Ireland coach and West Indies legend Phil Simmons and chatted

about the club with him. I asked him what kind of things he'd heard about Limerick and he replied "Well you know, some good, some bad" Top man!

Play resumed again after a lengthy break and we saw some good cricket.   Ireland came out all-guns-blazing and hit loads of boundaries. For one Eoin Morgan 4, the ball had to race with Windies outfielder Renako Morten to the boundary but the ball beat him to it.....though he was running so fast that he couldn't stop himself running into the crowd and he had to jump straight over our own Jason Craig's head!!! Ireland score was shooting up but wickets were falling, though Eoin Morgan stayed in throughout and batted brilliantly. Fidel Edwards took the best wicket of the day, straight bowling Kevin O'Brien with a lightning fast delivary!

Sadly play was stopped again due to heavy rain and hailstones.....and this time the match was called off for good. So a no result for the two teams battling hard in the Quadrangular Series.  But overall we had a fantastic day and everyone, though wet, was smiling when we got back on the bus for the long journey back to Limerick! An excellent trip altogether!!!

Limerick Lions vs Pres College Cork – May 2007

Limerick Cricket Club U13s made their competitive debut last Saturday against Pres College Cork at the Mardyke. Despite their inexperience, they put in a strong showing losing in the end by 20 runs.

Captain John Daly won the toss and elected to bowl first. Limerick Managed to restrict Pres to 53 from their 17 overs with all the bowlers Impressing especially Pritpal and Rav Singh, Daly and Robert Duncan. The bowlers were backed up in the field by good work by Conor Duggan and Glen Coady who made several good stops.

In response, Limerick made a slow start and struggled against the high bounce in the wicket. In the end they were 20 runs short but will have learned alot from their first match against a much more experienced team.

This should help them in their upcoming matches against West Cork,

Midleton and Christian Brothers Cork.
