MCU Senior Plate – Seniors weather storm and advance to
Plate final
28th July 2007
Limerick progressed to the final
of the Senior Plate competition beating a dogged Clonmel
side on run rate after the constant heavy rain had reduced the already
soft wicket and outfield to being unplayable.
Stand -in skipper Alan won what
was to be a vital toss and inserted Clonmel.
Limerick's opening bowlers Gaybo and Shershah soon had Clonmel
in trouble taking an early wicket apiece. Indeed even while wickets
weren't falling, the run rate remained slow until Syed
who had looked scratchy facing his first dozen or so balls against Gogi
suddenly opened his shoulders and began smashing the ball to all parts.
He was particularly severe on Anthony hitting him for 30 in 2 overs. With the wicket getting more and more cut-up
the score moved rapidly past 100 and towards a difficult score to
chase.
It took an important second
spell from Gaybo to dismiss Syed for 61 to a good high catch by Ryan and the
remaining Clonmel tail to restrict the home
side to 135.
Limerick got off to a terrible
start, Azeem getting a terrible LBW decision
as he hit the ball onto his thigh in the first over and then Morgan was
caught in the next over. To make matters worse, heavy rain began to
fall to make conditions even more difficult for batting. Without any
covers available, play continued. Steve and Alan batted patiently
bringing the score into the 30's before Steve was undone by a ball that
seemed to die in the wicket.
Survival became the order of the
day as Limerick looked to occupy the crease and stay ahead of the
required run rate as the rain continued to fall. The wet ball meant
that Limerick were able to pick up extras most overs
from wides. Goghi
and Anthony went for single figures before Alan also got a terrible LBW
hitting the ball onto his pad while batting well outside his crease.
With 6 wickets down and still 6 overs to go before the magical minimum 20 overs necessary for there to be a result, Limerick
were staring defeat in the face. However, Ryan managed to hold out for
5 crucial overs and in the end it was a
match-winning unbroken 8th wicket partnership between Gaybo and Shershah who managed to bat from the 17th
to the end of the 22nd over as well as keeping Limerick ahead of the
required run-rate. It was a mature effort from Limericks opening
bowlers in very difficult conditions. At the end of the 22nd over the
umpires decided that the conditions were unplayable and called a halt
to our innings.
Credit to the Clonmel skipper Darren Lang, who agreed that it
would be impossible to resume play, conceded defeat on run rate with
Limerick on 85 for 7.
Limerick men of the match: - Gaybo,
rapidly enhancing his growing reputation as an all-rounder, and
Shershah for his bowling and mature batting when required.
Moment of the
match: - Anthony - "my next
over will be better skip"
MCU Div 2 – Juniors come through testing time
21st July 2007
The LCC Junior team were in great spirits and all pumped up to
play the long-awaited home game against Midleton
at the UL grounds in Plassey.
The late start combined with rain delays resulted in the match
being reduced to 30 overs a side. Midleton won the toss and elected to bat and, for a
second, we thought that the overcast conditions would help our seamers…then we realised that the conditions
would generally be overcast period !!
Gogi and Raj opened the bowling for LCC and it soon became
apparent the Midleton openers were having
troubling “middling” the ball. The batsmen were getting
beaten regularly; however, they managed to hold the fort for 2 overs.
Gogi struck gold in the third over with a great delivery which J.Hitchmough hit straight to Ranjith
who made no mistake. LCC tasted blood and, immediately, Midleton were on the back foot; we wanted more!!
The next over from Raj sent the Midleton
top order into a tailspin; R.Smyth nicked a
rising delivery and our wicket-keeper, John Lenehan, completed a superb
catch. Two deliveries later, A.Whittaker was
comprehensively bowled with a ball that sneaked in between bat and pad
and Midleton were 3 down for around 5 runs.
We were ecstatic; Midleton never fully
recovered from the collapse of their top order.
Ankur Agarwal and Tom O’Neill were brought into the attack
and they bowled extremely well. Tom has great potential; he extracted
unpredictable bounce from the pitch and regularly beat the bat. Ankur
bowled well mixing pace with spin and the Midleton
batsmen never really managed to get on top of them. Both bowlers were
economical and were unlucky not to get wickets.
Runs were hard to come by for Midleton;
however, they battled on bravely. A.Brundon
from Midleton kept the score ticking along
with singles and the occasional boundary. Pradeep was bought into the
attack and, in an inspired spell, took 3 wickets which broke the
middle-order. Tom O’Neill took an excellent diving catch off K.Doren’s driven shot to give Pradeep his
first wicket; then, John Lenehan held on to an edged delivery from A.Brundon and, finally, Pradeep bowled C.Sweetnam with a great delivery to compete his 3
wicket haul.
Midleton continued to push the score along with S.Harrigan
but the pressure was building up very quickly. Midldleton’s
run rate was well below par and they decided to push their luck with
risky singles…bad idea!! Ranjith rose
to the challenge and his laser targeted throws resulted in 2 run-outs
which broke the last signs of resistance from Midleton.
Ranjith and John were absolutely fantastic in
the field and they played an important part in restricting Midleton’s scoring potential.
Finally, Midleton’s innings came
to a close; they were 106 for 8 after 30 overs.
LCC’s innings started on an ominous note due to an excellent opening
spell from Midleton’s seamers. R.Smyth ( 3 wickets) and A.Brundon
(2 wickets) bowled extremely well and reduced the LCC to 30 for 5 after
9 overs. LCC’s
backs were against the wall and we fought back with a superb
partnership from Gogi and Pradeep. Gogi was unbeaten on 44 runs which
included 5 fours and 2 sixes; it was a fantastic innings which turned the
tide. Pradeep provided excellent support by scoring 29 runs which
included 3 fours and 1 six. After Pradeep’s
dismissal, Raj joined Gogi in the middle and the duo safely guided LCC to
an unforgettable victory in 21.5 overs with 4
wickets to spare.
Congratulations to the LCC Junior team for an outstanding
performance; there was great camaraderie in the team and we enjoyed our
cricket as much as our victory!!
Men of the Match - Gogi and
Pradeep for their superb all-round performance(s).
Breakthrough performance - John Lenehan for
his brilliant wicketkeeping.
Sportsmanship Award - Mark Nestor for
“walking” without waiting for the umpire’s decision
(Please don’t do that again mate!!)
Catch of the Day - Tom
O’Neill’s fantastic diving catch.
Best Fielder -
Ranjith for 2 brilliant runouts.
