Limerick 86 all out; A Hartigan 28, C Thomas 19*
Galway 86 all out; L Campbell
23; A Hartigan 3 for 6, S Alam 3 for 22.
Limerick opened the new season with a
visit to Galway for a Munster Senior
Shield match which will be long remembered. While the quality of the match
was not the best the intensity of the finish made up for this as the match
ended in a tie.
Limerick batted first and made a poor start losing Jeff
Edwards (0 run out), David Lynch (3 bowled) and Alan Lynch (7 bowled) to be
14 for 43 in twelve overs. Anthony Hartigan
brought stability to the innings, scoring 28 before being 'adjudged' LBW
for 28. During his innings he had the pleasure of having stimulating,
albeit brief conversations with Shah Alam (5), Mark Nestor (2), Rizwan (0)
and Ryan Hartigan (0).
Not for the first time Chris Thomas
came to Limerick's rescue, hitting an unbeaten 19 in a ninth wicket stand
of 23 with Nick Fitzgerald in eleven overs. Fitzgeralds dismissal for 5
was immediately followed by debutant wicketkeeper Andy Greenslade
to leave Limerick 86 all out.
In reply Galway
lost an early wicket as Ryan Hartigan had Eamon
Walsh lbw for 1, but Liam Campbell and Alan Hickey brought the score to 35
in the 13th over before Chris Thomas bowled the former for 23. Despite
losing Nick Wheeler, run out for 1, the home team progressed steadily to 70
for 3 after 22 overs. With only 17 runs required
and 7 wickets left an easy win for the home team looked likely but they
slumped and added only 11 runs for the loss of six wickets in the next 10 overs. The Hartigan brothers and Shah Alam were the
architects of destruction before Galways last
wicket partnership brought the score levels before Anthony Hartigan had
Stephen Moss caught behind to end the match.
Senior Shield - Limerick vs University College Cork
May 26th 2001
Limerick 239 for 8; R Hartigan 73; A Lynch 59; Aamer 32; C
Thomas 31
UCC;
The weather deprived Limerick of an opportunity to claim their first win of
the season, as their match against U.C.C. had to be abandoned when Limerick were in a strong position. Batting first, Limerick made 239 for 8 from their forty allotted overs before persistent rain forced a premature end to
proceedings. Alan Lynch and newcomer Aamer put on
51 in the first 8 overs. The latter hit the next
delivery for 4, but was dismissed next ball having compiled a highly
impressive 32, including 6 fours. Robert Casey supported Lynch in a second
wicket stand of 33 in the next 7 overs before
becoming Don Wilson's first victim of the day. Lynch became Wilson's second
victim in the 20th over, having made an impressive 59.
Ryan Hartigan, having posted several
fine scores already this year, joined his brother, Anthony, at the wicket
when Limerick were
97 for 3. Anthony, captain for the day, made 10 and Chris McGrath 2 as the
score advanced to 121 for 5 in the 25th over. With 15 overs
left, Limerick might have crumbled, but
instead they almost doubled their total. Ryan Hartigan, in particular, and Wasim punished the bowlers relentlessly as the score
moved to 203 in the 36th over. This fine partnership of 82 in 11 overs ended when Wasim was
dismissed for 21. Hartigan, having hit 3 sixes and 6 fours, was dismissed
in the following over for a marvellous 73. In his current form, there is no
reason for him not to register a maiden century this season. U.C.C. heaved
a sigh of relief at having removed Hartigan, but their relief was misplaced
as Chris Thomas played a cameo innings of 31, including a six and 4 fours,
in just four overs before being run out as
Limerick finished on 239 for 8.
Senior Shield - Limerick
vs Kerry
May 27th 2001
Limerick 148 a/o; M Nestor 53; Wasim 24*; M Barber 4 for
23
Kerry 167 for 9; J Carnegie 26; G Revington
22; R Hartigan 3 for 25; M Nestor 2 for 14
Limerick lost to County
Kerry on Sunday in the Senior
Shield, the Munster Senior Shield, at Tralee. The home team made 167 for 9 from
their 40 overs, with Munster Interprovincial
opening batsman Jamie Carnegie top scorer with 26. Veteran Gordon Revington chipped in with a useful 22, while David
Ramsey (18) and Roy Hockley (17) also made valuable contributions. Limerick contributed handsomely to the total,
conceding 47 extras. Ryan Hartigan was the pick of Limerick's
bowlers, taking 3 wickets for 25 in 8 overs. Mark
Nestor took 2 for 14, while Robert Casey, Wasim, Aamer and Rizman each took
one wicket. Limerick in response made 148, falling 19 runs short of County Kerry's total. A marvelous
innings of 53 from Mark Nestor, including a six and 3 fours, provided the
batting highlight of the day. Wasim provided
excellent support with an unbeaten 24 and Rizman
made 19, but no other batsman reached double figures. Mike Barber took 4
wickets for 23 runs for the home team. Limerick
were left to rue the high number of extras
conceded, which ultimately lost them the match.
Senior Shield - Church
of Ireland vs
Limerick
June 8th 2001
Church of Irelands 90 all out; S Alam 5 for 37; R Hartigan 3 for 23
Limerick 91 for 0; A Lynch 47*;
J Edwards 37*.
The senior side maintained its good
run in the Munster Senior League with a crushing 10 wicket victory against
an understrength
Church of Ireland.
The home side won the toss and elected to bat but were soon in trouble as
Shah Alam had opener Chris Sweetman caught behind
by debutant wicketkeeper Jason Cummins. Dangerman
Derek Hales soon followed comprehensively bowled by Ryan Hartigan to leave
the home side struggling on 13 for 2. Home skipper Barry Crowley and Willie
Kavanagh managed to move the score on to 32
before Hartigan removed Crowley
for 16. Thereon all the home batsmen struggled against the pace and bounce
of the Limerick attack as wickets fell at
regular intervals. Alam proved the main thorn in the home teams side as he
picked up a further 4 wickets to finish with 5 for 37 from his 13 overs as the homeside were
eventually all out for just 90 from 32 overs.
Alam was ably supported by fellow pacemen Duncan
Purcell and Hartigan. Hartigan finished with 2 for 23 from 10 overs while Purcell grabbed 1 for 10 from 6 overs.
Limericks reply was comprehensive as
skipper Alan Lynch and veteran Jeff Edwards took just 19 overs to reach their target. Lynch was to narrowly miss
out on a deserved half century as he finished with 47 not out and Edwards
with a late flurry finished on 37 not out to ensure an emphatic victory for
the away side. The sides next assignment is in 2
weeks time against Kerry with confidence very much restored following back
to back victories.
